Did Grocery Giants kill Bumbalooza?

Did Grocery Giants kill Bumbalooza?

We love Bumbalooza products.  That is why my jaw dropped when I saw that they had closed the business.  Bumbalooza maker of unique gluten-free baking mixes had built momentum in the retail marketplace and was already in 400 stores.  What happened?  Reports indicate Bumbalooza went too big too fast.  Giant grocery chains often charge $20,000 for shelf space and typically have 90 day payment terms.  Inventory can change over three times before the company sees any return.

Have you ever wondered why some gross gluten-free products remain on store shelves?  The manufacture has enough capital to fund product placement.  This is one of the reasons why we host The Gluten-Free Awards.  We want to connect stores and consumers with the BEST products.  Grocery chains should be focused on providing quality to their customers and not cater to those producers who have enough cash to float years of product placement fees.  It’s unfortunate that a company like Bumbalooza who made great products had to overextend their cash flow.

Best Gluten-Free Accommodating Colleges

This is one of the most exciting categories we have in the gluten-free awards line-up.  Each year students at colleges and universities normally associated to a campus celiac support group vote for their school.  If you are searching for the best gluten-free accommodating colleges this list is a great place to start.  We recommend you talk to the school dietitians, and reach out to the campus support group as part of your gluten-free college evaluation process.  For further information, the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) has a great resource here.

Pharmaceutical Treatment for Celiac Disease Trial Update

Celiac Disease Medication Treatment

I ran into a very interesting article written about the potential pharmaceutical treatments for Celiac Disease. Research has moved into an exciting phase. For the first time there may be a substitution to the gluten-free diet. Don’t think all of these medications in trial do the same thing.

In fact, most of these pharmaceuticals act completely different and address gluten in a variety of ways. As drugs move from concept to Phase 3 confirmatory trials, they need to be evaluated by endpoints that are tailored to the drug, disease, and target patient populations. Perhaps most importantly, these endpoints need to be acceptable to regulatory agencies.

Would you try any of these medications during the trial period? How about once approved by the Feds? Would you wait a while? Let us know in the comment section below.

Best Gluten-Free Cold Cereal

5th Annual Gluten-Free Awards:

I have always been a huge fan of cold cereal. It brings back childhood memories of Saturday morning cartoons (when there was no such things as dedicated cartoon channels) and hanging around in PJ’s until the neighborhood kids came to play. Today gluten-free cold cereal has come a long way. The Chex brand of gluten-free cereals continue to show strong support from the celiac disease community. Post’s Fruity Pebbles is another great option if you are looking for that sugary morning kick. 2015 is going to be a huge year for gluten-free cereal since General Mills has announced a special process that ensures gluten-free cheerios. The gluten-free community is optimistic but also rightfully concerned. Hopefully during next year’s award for best gluten-free cold cereal we will have move brands to nominate. Please feel free to leave any comments of questions below. Enjoy your cereal and yes, it’s OK to drink the milk straight out of the bowl when you are done eating. ;0)

Best Gluten-Free Beer Brands

Best Gluten-Free Beer Brands

We wanted to eliminate any confusion this year and scaled down the best gluten-free beer brands to those who brew only with gluten-free products.  There is too much uncertainty around gluten removed beers and the safety for those with celiac disease.  If you have a favorite brand that is not represented here, please leave a comment.  Cheers!

Best Gluten-Free Bagel

5th Annual Gluten-Free Award

Have you noticed how expensive gluten free bagels are?  We started the Best Gluten-Free Bagel category to help you understand what products are available and what bagels are everybody’s favorite brand.  We have thousands each year vote for their favorite gluten free products to help you make wise purchasing decisions. There is nothing worse than buying an overpriced bag of gluten free bagels to find out the next morning that you can’t even sink your teeth into them.  We provide a price check that typically links to Amazon so you can see how much you are going to pay either online or at a grocery store.  If you can’t find any of these brands at your local store, please ask them to stock them.  If they don’t want to stock the best gluten free bagels you can always shop on Amazon.
