Our History and How it all Works

My wife and I created the Gluten-Free Awards seven years ago after we found families like us who couldn’t afford to experiment with expensive gluten free products. We needed to quickly find products our family would actually enjoy without going broke.  It was bad enough to have a Celiac Disease diagnosis but our grocery bill doubled and some of our family favorites disappeared instantly.

We didn’t ask for permission, we just started with a one-page website and a few hundred gluten-free folks who had struggled along with us.  Fast forward a few years and that one-page website has turned into a published buyers guide that is distributed to thousands of people including grocery store buyers and category managers.

Each year we give back to the community and focus on our mission by distributing as many free copies of the guide as possible during a short time period each January.  The number of free copies distributed is a fundamental method in which we measure our success.
I am amazed that we are now going into our seventh consecutive year and love the method in which we facilitate a collective and forceful voice.

Personally, we don’t always agree with the results.  Each year some of our personal favorites don’t make the nominations but we are passionate about the power of the collective results generated.  The majority votes rule and will also be the method in which we crown the victors.

This year we have over forty categories and some of the results are going to literally shock the gluten free community.

Data showing the gluten free trend is dying

Data showing the gluten free trend is dying

Here is data showing that the gluten free trend is dying but celiac disease awareness continues to remain flat.

I don’t often look at Google Trends (yes, it’s a real thing) but when I do, I always look to see how often the term “gluten free” is searched over the term “Celiac Disease”. It’s my opinion that the gluten free trend is dying and celiac disease awareness continues to reGluten Free is Over Rovermain flat and Google proves my argument.  I am thankful for the increased trend in the term gluten free.  I can now shop at virtually any grocery store and find gluten free labels on boxes and even on store shelves.  Ask your grocery manager about their gluten free products and more than likely they will walk with pride showing you all they have to offer.  Even my dog has gluten free options now (talk about trendy). What I don’t like is the way I feel when I order gluten free food or even ask about a “special”  (YOU MUST DO AIR QUOTES) gluten free section.  I am not that trendy guy who eats bark and drinks wheat grass.  Wait!  Is wheat grass safe to drink?  Yes it is, because some registered dietitian told me that the gluten protein has not fully developed yet.  Only a gluten dork would know that, as my little sister would say.  Now that the trend is over or at least dying, lets start focusing on the bigger issue; Celiac Disease.  Every time I have to explain to somebody that celiac disease affects 1 out of 133 people and only 3% know they have it, I get the big eyed response; why don’t I already know this?  Nevertheless, lets continue to focus on gluten intolerance and Celiac Disease awareness and leave the bark eating to the hipsters.

Thanks for the Gluten-Free Award vote.
